We’re facing a landscape of federal agencies that are constantly changing – artificial intelligence, five generations in the workplace, and matrixed organizations, to name a few. Leadership models will change. New variables, fancy graphics, and complex frameworks will be introduced every year. It’s guaranteed.

But one thing will never change – the need for love and our desire to smile. The heart will never change, nor will the need for connection and the feeling of joy. Leadership is about love. A little laughter helps too!

Dr. Zina Sutch leads the Office of Diversity and Inclusion and Civil Rights at the Small Business Administration. Prior to her current role, she oversaw OPM’s responsibilities related to Recruitment, Policy and Outreach, Veterans Services, and D&I. She also served at USDA as: Executive Secretariat; Director of Diversity, Recruitment, and Work/Life; Provost of the Virtual University; and USDA’s Chief Training Officer. She has a doctoral degree from the University of Maryland and a master’s degree from George Washington University. She is currently faculty at American University. Her new co-authored book, Leading With Love and Laughter, is projected for release in 2021. She lives on a sailboat somewhere on the Chesapeake, depending on the wind.

Professor Patrick Malone is the Director, Key Executive Leadership Programs at American University. He is a frequent guest lecturer at organizations across the country including the Fulbright Scholars Program and the Visiting Scholars program at Yale. His most recent publications include: “Go Ahead, Laugh – Why Humor Makes for a Better Workplace,” and “VulnerABILITY – Can Managers Benefit from Extreme Exposure?” His TED Talk, “Thinking about Time,” is available online and his co-edited book, The Handbook of Federal Leadership and Administration, was published in November 2016, and his new co-authored book, The Leadership Communication-Connection Deception – The Fallacy of One Without the Other, is projected for release in Fall 2019.
